Vic: Transport users welcome move to single tram network

Victoria's Public Transport Users Association has welcomed moves to bring Melbourne's
tram network under control of a single operator.

Melbourne's two train networks may also merge to create a single operator network by
the end of the year.

A spokeswoman for Victorian Transport Minister PETER BATCHELOR said yesterday that
talks were under way on an agreement to appoint a single operator for Melbourne's trams.

The transport users' association says the current system can be confusing for commuters.

Its spokesman DANIEL BOWEN has also urged the government to consider returning the
tram system to public ownership.

In June this year, the government rebranded the public transport system, with Melbourne's
entire train, tram and bus networks coming under the Metlink banner.

At that time Mr BATCHELOR said the Metlink initiative was part of a process that would
ultimately see a reduction in the number of private operators.
